Advocacy Group Claims to Have Scraped Millions of Audio Files from Spotify

An activist group has stated to have scraped a vast number of songs from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to publish them online.

Possible Boost for Artificial Intelligence Development

Observers noted the apparent leak could aid AI companies searching for material to train their technology.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of metadata such as performer and record names. Spotify, which hosts more than 100 million tracks, confirmed that the breach did not represent its entire catalog.

“We have located and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in illegal scraping,” said a company spokesperson.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access identified a third party collected public metadata and used illicit tactics to circumvent DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of exchanging large digital files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ rights, said the breached music would likely be utilized for training AI models.

“Training on pirated data is sadly widespread in the tech sector, so this accessed music is highly likely to be used training AI models,” he said.

The group's website alludes to a large online archive, a huge online archive of pirated books that has reportedly been used by Meta to develop its systems.

The co-founder of an AI startup wrote on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in theory “build their own personal free version of the service”. The executive added it could also enable tech companies to “educate models on modern music at scale”.

Copyright has emerged as a key issue between artists, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have raised concerns against a ministerial suggestion to allow AI companies utilize copyright-protected work without permission unless the rights holder opts out. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for science, research and development informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
