US Attack on Venezuela Stokes Fears of Potential Greenland Acquisition.

Recent American strike in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have sparked unease regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the resource-rich landmass in the wake of the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Only a short time after the start of the Venezuelan campaign, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a symbolic image. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked swift and strong criticism from Danish officials.

"We are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. US security is equally the Arctic's and our security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further highlighted that the kingdom had significantly boosted its military budget recently, allocating a large sum specifically for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "And yes, we demand full recognition for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer role to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy praised the president's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Ever since assuming office, the US president has consistently alarmed European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It already hosts the most northerly US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a significant television appearance, the leader refused to exclude the use of armed action to gain control of Greenland. This position comes amid growing great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Friction and Local Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to declare independence for many years.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Some experts are now reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One policy analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
