Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
